Had a lazy day today in Xingyi, Guizhou Province but we had a good dinner.

For lunch we walked a couple of doors down to a casual eatery. No Dianping this time! I spent a long time deciphering the menu. In the end we got:

Mince and dry noodles

Clay pot rice

Unfortunately, neither were remarkable. The clay pot rice was not great, and I could not wait to eat a real clay pot rice in Hong Kong.

Lion Pavilion 獅子樓 (廣場北路店)

Dinner was at a huge restaurant called Lion Pavilion. It was predominantly a hot pot restaurant but we wanted to order regular a la carte, so we had to walk all the way to the back of the building, where there were numerous tables and chairs without the hot pot burner.

We were given a massive book of a menu, and all the pages looked like this:

Menu

I was so overwhelmed. By now, mung bean jelly and shredded potato was becoming a favourite, which meant I knew those characters. We were happy to order those two but we needed a beefier dish. So I asked the waitress for a recommendation using Baidu translate. She pointed at something and I translated as fast as I could. The translation came out a bit inaccurate, and we said, “well what the hell” and ordered it.

Dinner

Out came this huge dish of bacon and these strange deep fried rice cakes (bottom), as in Kellogg's MLC looking rice cakes. They were so DRY and difficult to eat. But the bacon, OMG THE BACON. REAL BACON IN CHINA. It was amazing, and so smokey. Here's a close up of the bacon dish (there's more bacon hidden amongst the other stuff):

The shredded potato (top) was decent, proper shredded potato. Tangy and just a bit sour.

The jelly (left) unfortunately was not made of mung bean and was thicker and denser than the usual mung bean jelly. But it was ok with the chilli oil.

There was so much food, we could barely finish it all. But of course we ate all the BACON.

Later we hit up the supermarket again and I found the Thai Yakult knock off, Betagen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
